SV NICHOLAS MACLEAN OF CHRISTIE'S SAYING: "IT HAS A RICHNESS AND INCREDIBLE FLUIDITY OF THE PAINT WHICH WAS OBVIOUSLY APPLIED VERY QUICKLY AND YET IT CAPTURES THE LIGHT ON THE FEATHER AND AT THE SAME TIME THE LIGHT THROUGHOUT HER HAIR. YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER AT THIS TIME IT WAS AN EXTREMELY MODERN PIECE OF PAINTING. IT'S FROM THE LATE 1870S. AND WE'RE SO USED TO SEEING A PORTRAIT BEING PAINTED WHERE THE BACKGROUND WOULD BE ALSO PORTRAYED WITH THE SAME NATURALISM. BUT IF YOU LOOK AT A PORTRAIT, YOU'RE LOOKING AT SOMEBODY CLOSE-UP. THE BACKGROUND IS ALWAYS GOING TO BE OUT OF FOCUS. AND THIS WAS AT THE TIME, OF COURSE, A VERY MODERN PIECE OF PAINTING. BUT FOR US ITS SOMETHING WE CAN COMPLETELY ACCEPT NOW." (ENGLISH) 1.05 5. - Story Text: An extraordinary painting by Renoir is expected to be the highlight of an upcoming auction of Impressionist and 19th century art at Christie's in New York city.
Christie's in New York will hold its spring auction of Impressionist and nineteenth century art next Tuesday (May 5), with Renoir's "Jeune Fille au Bouquet de Tulipes" expected to capture the most interest of the evening.
The Renoir is also expected to fetch the highest price of the evening, 15 million U.S.dollars.The painting is of a young female model, with much of her face covered by her hat and air, posed with her back turned slightly to the viewer.
Nicholas Maclean of Christie's described the painting: "It has a richness and incredible fluidity of the paint which was obviously applied very quickly and yet it captures the light on the feather (hat) and at the same time the light throughout her hair." Also featured in the sale is Claude Monet's "Waterloo Bridge." It is estimated to go for between five million and seven million U.S.dollars.This is one of the paintings in Monet's bridge series. He was particularly captivated by the effects of light and fog on the River Thames.
Also in this estimated price category is a remarkable drawing by Vincent van Gogh's, "Souvenir de Saintes-Maries, Mediterranee." Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo that this drawing of small boats on the beach was among the best he had done up to that point in his life. And art historians agree.
Edgar Degas's painting "Danseuses au Foyer" is also expected to fetch as much as 7 million U.S.dollars.This work is the artist's last interpretation of one of the most important series in his career: the ballet rehearsal. This picture may be the last oil painting that Degas ever finished.
Works by Gustavbe Courbet will also be represented in the evening sale.Among them is the painting "Le Coup de Vent," expected by Christie's to bring as much as 1.2 million U.S.
dollars. It is a large-scale painting of a storm sweeping over a forest landscape, done in a romantic mood with emphasis on dark colors in the sky and rocky terrain.
