- Story Text: British Airways said on Wednesday (December 6) the diamond jewels that disappeared from the Duchess of York's luggage on a flight from New York to London had been recovered and a baggage handler arrested.
The airline said its security personnel and the United States (U.S.) Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had recovered the diamond necklace and bracelet, unofficially valued at 385,000 U.S.
dollars (250,000 pounds).
"Following investigations by the airline's security staff in New York, supported by the FBI, a 19-year-old man Gilbert Terrero employed by handling agent Hudson General Handling Company was arrested," a BA statement said.
"The man was employed as a loader by this contracting company at the airline's passenger terminal at JFK (John F Kennedy) (airport)." Terrero is alleged to have snatched the bag from the hold just as the plane was sealed for take-off. BA said Terrero was expected to be charged later on Wednesday.
The recovered jewellery was displayed at an FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) press conference later on Wednesday.
The FBI said the jewllery had been stolen between the time of the final baggage check and loadinbg onto the aircraft.
The investigators added the necklace was found in the Terrero's garden shed.
They stated the Duchess of York's necklace was broken into three pieces, with five diamonds missing, but the bracelet was intact. FBI agents said were confident they would find missing stones.
Britain's Queen Elizabeth gave the jewels to the duchess on her 1986 marriage to the queen's second son, Prince Andrew.
Fergie, who had worn the necklace at a White House reception hosted by President Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary, returned to London on Monday on a Concorde flight from New York.
