- Story Text: Many stores in London's busiest shopping centre, Oxford street, reopened for business on Friday -- the day after a massive car bomb explosion which blasted many shops and injured three people.
Even Selfridges, a well-known store nearest to the bomb, was opened for business as usual, although its main entrances were closed.
A section of the street affected by the blast, was, however, still cordoned off to allow workmen to clear the debris and repair damaged shop fronts and display windows.
The bomb, weighing about 100 pounds (45 kilos) and believed to be the largest ever used in Britain, shattered shop windows over a wide area. Irish terrorists were believed responsible for the explosion.
Earlier, bomb experts and forensic detectives sorted through the wreckage, including the remains of the car in which the bomb was placed.
The explosion took place only hours before Irish groups were expected to announce a Christmas cease-fire to operations in Northern Ireland and bombings in Britain.
It was the third bombing in Britain this week. One man died when three post office telephone exchanges in London were bombed on Tuesday (17 December).
