- Story Text: Teenagers from all over the United State gathered in
Virginia to compete with their homemade rockets.
It is rocket science, a team of students from
Farmington, Minnesota took the Team America Rocketry
Challenge crown on Saturday (May 21, 2005), attaining a nearly
perfect score to beat 99 other teams.
The team launched its rocket and had it safely return
to earth in 59.9 seconds, just 1/100 of a second from the
target of 60. It also returned the payload of two raw eggs
safely with no cracks.
More than 500 middle and high school students from 27
states converged upon Great Meadow, in Virginia, a
picturesque steeplechase racecourse outside Washington D.C.
to vie for the title.
The third installation of the annual contest included a
total prize of $60,000 (USD) in savings bonds and cash.
Almost 10,000 students on 712 teams participated in
regional competition all over the country.
The annual event is intended to stimulate interest in
rocket science among high school students.
