- Story Text: Thousands of bagpipers and drummers from across the
globe have marched into the record books in Scotland's capital
city, Edinburgh.
His Royal Highness Prince Charles and Scottish rugby star
Gavin Hastings were among the many hundreds who gathered to
support the event.
More than eight and a half thousand pipers and
drummers, some from as far afield as the United States, Canada
and Australia made up the biggest bagpipe band in history on
Saturday (August 5).
Former Scottish rugby captain Gavin Hastings marched with
the band around Edinburgh castle and through its historic
centre. "Scotland has brought an awful lot to the world," he
said, "and we're seeing it in all it's splendour in front of
Edinburgh castle."
Hundreds of spectators lined the marchers' route, many
dressed in kilts for the occasion.
One of the organisers of the event, Magnus Orr, saw the
event as a unique opportunity for bagpipe players from around
the world to meet and celebrate piping. "Over the last three
hundred years the great highland bagpipe has reached all
corners of the globe and today they're all coming back to the
capital of Scotland to give a tune for Marie Curie Cancer
Care," he said.
The organisers hoped to have raised some 500,000 pounds
($750,000) for the cancer care charity.
The musicians smashed the previous world record of 3,000
people for the largest number of bagpipers and drummers to
march together. The old record was set some five years ago at
another event organised by Marie Curie Cancer Care.
Spectators agreed that the event was not only for a good
cause, but a great time was had by all. One spectator had
come all the way from California to take part in the
festivities. "We're marching in tomorrow's cavalcade parade
in the afternoon. It's a marching group from our church out
there," he said.
"I did not know before that they would come from all over,
I just thought they came from Scotland and all parts of the
area here. It's been very impressive," said another spectator
from Germany.
After the march, piping competitions and performances
continued. Prince Charles also attended the event and took
time to meet several of the band members.
