- Story Text: U.S. soldiers have arrested a man suspected of
organising attacks on U.S. troops.
U.S. soldiers arrested a man in the Iraqi city of
Tikrit, 160 km north of Baghdad on Friday night (August 1, 2003)
who was suspected of organising guerrilla attacks against
U.S troops.
In the night-time raid on a house in the southwestern
part of Tikrit, soldiers of the 4th Infantry Division, 1st
Brigade, backed by helicopters, met no obvious resistance
as they took the middle-aged, unidentified man into
custody. It is not known whether the man has close
connections with former Iraqi leader, Saddam Hussein.
"We won't be able to determine that immediately but
obviously everything that we look for at this point leads
to the destruction of that regime," Lieutenant Colonel
Steve Russell told reporters at the scene.
The United States says die-hard Saddam loyalists and
some foreign fighters are behind a guerrilla campaign that
has killed 52 U.S. troops since President George W. Bush
declared major combat over on May 1.
Friday night's arrest, at a walled villa in a quiet,
residential neighbourhood, involved several U.S. units,
including two helicopters and soldiers equipped with night
vision gear. The suspect was led away in plastic handcuffs,
blindfolded, and driven off in a truck for interrogation.
Officers said two other Saddam loyalists were detained
near Tikrit on Friday. They were the latest of "scores" of
such figures, some quite senior, detained in raids this
week.
