- Story Text: Strikes in France disrupted public transport, air travel, banks and several private companies on Thursday (April 13) as unions pressed demands for pay rises 10 days before the presidential election.
In Paris, the metro underground railway, suburban trains and bus services were disrupted by a stoppage from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A third of metro trains and buses were expected not to run.
Transport workers marched in central Paris to the offices of conservative Prime Minister Edouard Balladur.
Staff at the domestic airline Air Inter called a two-day stoppage on Thursday and Friday, the start of the Easter holiday, to demand talks on wage rises, contracts and plans to cut 600 jobs.
Unions representing 300,000 staff in the banking sector called for stoppages throughout France to demand pay talks.
Employees at the public telephone company France Telecom and at the state labour exchange ANPE held a one-day stoppage over pay.
Many postal workers also stayed at home.
Private companies such as chemicals giant Rhone-Poulenc, oil firm Elf Aquitaine and tyre manufacturer Michelin were also affected by strikes.
