- Story Text: A one-day strike by French rail workers disrupted train services in France on Wednesday (October 25) except for the Eurostar link between France and Britain via the Channel tunnel, SNCF French railways said.
One third to two thirds of normal services were running on high-speed lines and other inter-city links, causing more misery for travellers after a nationwide strike by five million public sector workers on October 10.
Five rail unions of the state-run SNCF called the strike to press for higher pay and highlight fears that the loss-making firm, saddled by huge debts, wants swingeing cuts in the rail network by the year 2000.
The strike also disrupted suburban services around Paris and other cities. Many commuters took to their cars, bringing tailbacks around the capital in the morning rush-hour.
