- Story Text: Hundreds of thousands of teachers and students went on strike across France on Tuesday (February 7), heralding tougher times for Prime Minister Edouard Balladur's so-far tranquil campaign for this spring's presidential election.
Unions called the strike to demand more jobs, pay rises and better working conditions. University students joined in to protest against an official report recommending a rise in tuition fees and more autonomy for state universities.
Protesters marched peacefully in many towns. Thousands marched through central Paris, disrupting traffic already hampered by floods cutting off roads along the river Seine.
The one-day "kindergarten to university" protests were the first major social unrest since the conservative premier, overwhelming favourite in opinion polls, officially announced his candidacy last month for the April 23-May 7 poll.
The teachers' United Union Federation (FSU) said more than half of the country's one million state school personnel stopped work and the percentage of strikers in Paris reached 70 percent.
