- Story Text: Five people have been killed and 15 others wounded
in a car bomb attack in the northern Iraqi city of Baiji.
Five Iraqis were killed and 15 others wounded on
Wednesday (November 17, 2004) when a car bomb exploded near a
U.S. military patrol in the northern oil city of Baiji,
hospital officials said.
Witnesses said the bomb, which blew up in a market area
near the centre of the Sunni Muslim city, damaged a U.S.
armoured vehicle, prompting some of the troops to open fire.
It was not clear whether they caused some of the
casualties.
Several U.S. soldiers appeared to have been hurt,
witnesses said. There was no immediate comment from the
U.S. military.
In Falluja, U.S. Marines pounded the town with mortars
overnight (November 16) in a bid to remove remaining
pockets of guerrillas.
Flashes of explosion lit the sky as sounds of loud
explosion rocked the city.
Marines began firing mortars late at night and
intensified the attacks to facilitate what they called
clean up operations to clear the city of weapons and
insurgents who survived a weeklong offensive.
Meanwhile, residents of the nearby Saqlawiya town some
15 km (nine miles) north of Falluja said the U.S. warplanes bombed a
house in the area, killing four civilians.
"This is a house of civilian families. Innocent
farmers. The house was completely damaged. Look this house.
Where are you Iyad Allawi? Iyad Allawi, Why this? A whole
village was destroed," said a resident of the area.
The house was reduced to rubble and and a civilian car
was damaged. A big crater was caused by the bombing.
People who fled Falluja city and sought refuge in
Saqlawiya told a harrowing stories of death and destruction
in the city. They spoke of wounded people left dying in
streets with stray dogs eating their flesh.
They also attacked Iraq's interim Prime Minister Iyad
Allawi for approving attack on the city.
"There are a number of dead bodies lying in street and
dogs are eating them. Is this the democracy that Iyad
Allawi is talking about? The damage of the city of
Falluja. We are now homless. They bombed our houses and
arrested people. Is this the democracy, which Iyad Allawi
is talking about? He has cheated the world with it. Shame
on them, these things they did to Iraqis," said a man who
fled the city during the fighting.
One woman living in the school building with no
furniture except for mattresses and kitchen utensils said
she did not want anything for herself, only victory for the
fighters resisting in Falluja.
"We sacrifice everything. We do not want food or water,
only we pray to God to aid the Mujahideen in Falluja. We
ask God to aid them with victory and defeat Iyad Allawi,
this criminal dog," said a woman from Falluja.
U.S. forces which launched the offensive on the rebel
bastion say they have taken control of the town but
scattered resistance remains.
U.S. officials say more than 1,000 insurgents have been
killed and more than 1,000 arrested in the battle to take
the mainly Sunni Muslim city.
