- Story Text: Palestinian PM Qurie has condemned an Israeli
missile strike in Gaza which killed a 12-year-old boy and
injured three members of Islamic Jihad.
An Israeli helicopter slammed a missile into a car
in the Gaza Strip on Saturday (February 7), killing a
12-year-old boy and wounding three Islamic militants
travelling inside the vehicle.
The missile smashed into the front bonnet of the white
car, turning it into a mound of twisted metal. At least
seven passers-by were hit by shrapnel shards from the attack
The three Islamic Jihad militants in the car were
seriously wounded, including the apparent target of the
strike, Aziz al-Shami, one of the top leaders of Islamic
Jihad's armed wing.
Al-Shami was a bodyguard and relative of Islamic Jihad
leader Abdallah al-Shami. Israel's attempt to kill him
would likely further anger Islamic Jihad, which has carried
out scores of suicide bombings over the past decade.
In the West Bank town of Ramallah, Palestinian Prime
Minister Ahmed Qurie met with Cabinet members to discuss
the attack.
Qurie called the strike "an attempt to escalate the
situation". "This cowardly aggression is condemned and
rejected," he told reporters.
Israel has killed scores of Palestinian militants in
helicopter missile attacks on their cars since a
Palestinian uprising began in September 2000. The
strikes have been widely condemned by the international
community.
Meanwhile, hundreds of Palestinian gathered in east
Jerusalem to protest the wall that Israel is building
around Arab east Jerusalem.
The protesters waved Palestinian flags and held pictures of
Palestinian President Yasser Arafat.
Israel is continuing to build the separation barrier in
the West Bank despite Palestinian condemnation and American
pressure.
