- Story Text: U.S forces launch an airstrike on the rebel-held
city of Falluja, which witnesses say killed two people.
U.S. forces launched air strikes on the rebel-held
city of Falluja in the early hours of Tuesday (October 12),
killing two people witnesses said.
Falluja residents said that the target was one of their
famous Kebab restaurants.
Witnesses said that two people working at the
restaurant were killed.
"I have questions for the Iraqi government - When will
the Falluja tragedy and the tragedy of all Iraq finish?
When can we live in peace? Why are they attacking a
restaurant? Where are the terrorists and the Arab fighters?
" asked one Falluja resident at the scene of the strike.
The U.S. army said that this airstrike was targeting a
terrorist meeting place used by loyalists of their top foe
in Iraq, Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.
The U.S millitary said in a statement that
Multi-National Force-Iraq struck a known Zarqawi location
in central Falluja at 12:01 AM on October 12. Following
the engagement, secondary explosions were reported,
indicating the strong likelihood of weapons caches and
explosive devices.
"Terrorists frequently planned operations from this
location. Plans included targeting Iraqi governmental
leadership, Iraqi Security Forces, coalition forces and
innocent Iraqi citizens." the statement added .
Talks have been underway in Falluja aimed at restoring
authority there.
Zarqawi is one of Washington's most wanted man and has
offered 25 million US dollars for information leading to
his death or capture. Zarqawi's group has claimed
responsibility for a wave of suicide bombings and the
killings of hostages in Iraq.
Over the past few months, U.S. forces have mounted
several air strikes in Falluja, west of Baghdad, on targets
they said were buildings used by Zarqawi's network. The
U.S. military has conceded it does not have control of
Falluja, and that the city is in rebel hands.
Anti-American sentiments run high in Falluja and
Ramadi, Sunni insurgent strongholds west of the capital.
The insurgents are bent on driving coalition forces from
the country.
