- Story Text: INTRO: Residents of North and South Carolina have begun clearing up after Hurricane Bertha tore through coastal areas causing havoc.
------------------------------------------------------------------ The sky was blue and seas were calm on Saturday (July 13) as residents in Wilmington, North Carolina, came out to view the damage done to property by the gusting winds and torrential rain of Hurricane Bertha.
Armed with saws, locals cut through fallen trees and surveyed damaged vehicles.
At the marina, all looked peaceful and calm but yacht owners were awaiting permission to go and check out damage to boats.
The calm seas and balmy weather were a far cry from the winds of up to 90 mph (150 kph) which uprooted trees, ripped roofs off buildings, knocked over signs and shredded power lines in North and South Carolina on Friday (July 12).
Bertha eased on its journey northwards and was downgraded to a tropical storm as it moved into Virginia on Saturday afternoon.
