- Story Text: Dozens of anti-G8 demonstrators didn't let the wet weather damper their spirits on Thursday (May 26) as they continued to protest in the French port city of Le Havre against the international summit and several arrests made in recent days Protesters have been banned from approaching the G8 summit venue, in the seaside resort of Deauville, and have set up camp outside the port town of Le Havre, some 40km away.
Many of them have been living there for days, but so far the numbers have not met with expectations.
Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Le Havre on Saturday (May 21) where several were later arrested for smashing windows.
Since then, protesters have been gathering outside the police station where they are being held, calling for their release.
One protester speaking to Reuters TV, said that it was a human right to express opinion.
"The meaning is that the people have possibility to give their opinions to the politicians, and the question is we don't have the possibility to give our opinions to the politicians. No-one has spoken about the people who are against the G8 and who want to give their opinion to the politicians," said Florian from Germany.
G8 summits have become lightning rods for anti-globalisation protests and since the disastrous 2001 meeting in Genoa, Italy, where a protester was shot and killed by police, all G8s have been held in remote areas that are easily sealed off.
World leaders will are gathering until Friday (May 27) in Deauville where they will discuss aid for North African states after recent popular uprisings and ways to end the conflict in Libya at a summit this week, but could get side-tracked by wrangling over who should be the new IMF chief.
