- Story Text: Galvanised by the Occupy Wall Street movement, protesters spent their first night camping outside the European Central Bank (ECB) in Frankfurt.
Demonstrators set up their tents, with police permission, on Saturday night (October 15) as part of the Occupy Germany movement which saw thousands protest across the country.
On Monday (October 17) when baks reopen, protesters plan to form a loose cordon around the entrance.
"From tomorrow on we will stand in front of the ECB, in loose formations so that the bankers can go through us but they have to confront us, they have to see our faces.
They have to see that we are here to fight against the financial crimes they do. The have to see that three are people that think about what happens and want to change something,"
said camping participant, Alexander Sack.
Organisers said up to 5,000 people took part in the Frankfurt protests, with police estimating that 3,000 took part in Berlin.
Altogether Occupy Germany organisers said some 40,000 participants had turned out to protest. Other estimates were much lower.
The ECB campers have been given official permission to stay until Wednesday (October 19). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
