- Story Text: Some 100 people gathered at the Foret de Montgeon, outside the northern French city of Le Havre on Wednesday (May 25) to prepare for protests against the nearby Group of Eight summit.
World leaders will gather on Thursday (May 26) and Friday (May 27) in the seaside town of Deauville some 40km away.
The anti-G8 protesters have set up camp, with all the amenities of toilets and kitchens, and say they plan to demonstrate to leaders that sharing of power should be done differently.
"We are here to offer other solutions, to offer another way of living together and it is possible to organise it so that everyone can make decisions and participate in the organisation of their lives," demonstrator Marine told Reuters TV.
Marine said she believes no one person should be in power.
"It is very important that everyone has the chance to participate in decision-making. We have a clear method of organising things so that we can avoid one single person taking power. During our meetings we each express ourselves and we try and give time to everyone and then we take a vote," she said.
Some 6,000 people were reported to have taken to the streets in the mainly peaceful demonstration in Le Havre on Saturday (May 21) but a small number of people smashed windows and graffitied areas of the town.
At the summit G8 leaders will discuss aid for North African states after recent popular uprisings and ways to end the conflict in Libya at a summit this week, but could get side-tracked by wrangling over who should be the new IMF chief.
The G8 comprises of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and the United States. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
