- Story Text: Clashes break out near Baghdad Sunni mosque between
Iraqis and US soldiers. At least one dead.
U.S. troops traded fire with guerrillas on Thursday
(May 27) after a roadside bomb was detonated beside an
American convoy on a Baghdad highway. At least one Iraqi
was killed and seven were wounded, witnesses said.
At least six of the wounded were passengers in a
minibus which was caught in the crossfire, witnesses said.
The minibus was completely burned out.
U.S. soldiers said they had come under fire after the
bomb was detonated.
"A US convoy stopped and took fire from the house,
where the van is burning and US soldiers returned fire and
killed one of the gunmen. And the other one escaped to the
house and then in the process the van caught fire.
Currently we have several civilians wounded and they are
being treated by US military until they can get evac-ed
(evacuated) to the hospital," said US Lieutenant Malef at
the scene.
