  • Story Text: British actor Hugh Grant apologised to his loved ones and colleagues on Tuesday (June 27) after being arrested for allegedly having sex with a Hollywood prostitute, an act he described as "completely insane." Grant, 34, best known for playing a shy romantic in last year's hit movie, "Four Weddings and a Funeral," was booked on suspicion of lewd conduct after allegedly picking up a prostitute on Hollywood's Sunset Boulevard, and having sex with her in his car.

    "Last night I did something completely insane," Grant said in a statement released through his publicist. "I have hurt people I love and embarrassed people I work with. For both things, I am more sorry than I can ever possibly say." Police alleged Grant picked up a 23-year-old prostitute called Divine Brown and drove her to a nearby residential street. There, they engaged in "a lewd act," they said.

    Grant, also known for being the long-term partner of British actress and beauty Liz Hurley, was arrested at 0830 GMT on Tuesday and booked on a misdemeanor charge of "lewd conduct in a public place." The woman was taken into custody on suspicion of prostitution.

    He was released on his own recognisance and ordered to appear in court for arraignment on July 18. He could face up to a year in jail but authorities said such charges often result in a sentence to perform community service.

    Grant lives in London, but Hurley recently moved to Los Angeles. He was apparently in town for media interviews to promote his new film, "Nine Months." Hurley, who recently signed a contract to promote Estee Lauder cosmetics, delayed a product launch schedulded in London on Wednesday. She was mobbed by photographers leaving a day-long meeting with company officials at the Halkin Hotel.

    Grant reportedly telephoned her from the police station shortly after his arrest to inform her of the incident. He was expected to arrive back in Britain on Wednesday to apologise in person to Hurley.
