- Story Text: Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) Chairman Yasser Arafat, fresh from his triumphant return to Gaza and Jericho, arrived in Paris on Wednesday (July 6) for talks with Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin on the next stage in Palestinian self-rule.
Arafat landed at noon (1000 GMT) at Orly Airport and went straight to a VIP lounge.
He met Rabin and Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres shortly afterwards at the French government's Kleber conference centre.
Arafat said his talks with Rabin had boosted Middle East peace prospects.
"A fresh impulse was given to peace by Israelis and Palestinians," he told a news conference after the talks in Paris.
"The meeting was positive, fruitful," he added.
Arafat added to comments he made earlier on Wednesday before leaving Gaza when he said "We have many issues to discuss with Mr Rabin, our agenda is full of topics to implement the (peace) accord, particularly the release of prisoners." Rabin said the first phase of the Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement, the transfer of power to the Palestinians in the Gaza strip and Jericho, had been successfully completed.
The two sides agreed to create three committees to discuss outstanding issues on the Gaza-Jericho accord, an early transfer of civilian responsibility to the Palestinians in the rest of the West Bank, and the holding of a conference with Egypt and Jordan on the fate of Palestinian refugees.
Rabin, Arafat and Peres were to receive later on Wednesday the UNESCO peace prize for their September 1993 mutual recognition agreement which ended decades of Israeli-Palestinian enmity.
