- Story Text: Argentine authorities detain and will extradite
Bosnian Serb paramilitary wanted for war crimes.
A Bosnian Serb paramilitary sentenced for crimes
committed during the 1992-95 Bosnian war and wanted by a
U.N. war crimes court has been arrested in Argentina.
A spokeswoman for Argentina's federal police who asked
not to be named said Milan Lukic was detained on an
international arrest warrant and was taken to Argentina's
court on Tuesday (August 09).
Judicial authorities confirmed that Lukic will be
extradited to The Hague, Netherlands where he will be tried
on the charges against him. No date has been set.
Lukic was tried in absentia in July by a Belgrade judge
for the murder of 16 Muslims in October 1992 and sentenced
to 20 years in prison.
Yugoslav officials say Lukic headed a paramilitary
group believed responsible for abducting, torturing and
killing the victims, all Yugoslav nationals.
Lukic is being held in a Buenos Aires jail and was
expected to appear in court for questioning before a
federal judge in the coming days, the spokeswoman said.
