- Story Text: Okinawa is preparing to play host to one-and-a-half million tourists drawn to the island by Expo '75, a Japanese tribute to the sea. Under the title "The Sea We Would Like to See", the exhibition will open on 20 July with more than 20 nations involved.
The main pavilion of Expo '75 is a two-storey, sixteen-and-a-half thousand ton structure named "Aquapolis". It is the prototype of a future floating city and is the biggest semi-submersible marine structure in the world. It can cope with 2,400 visitors at a time in its exhibition rooms, central hall, observation galleries and upper deck plaza. It also provides working and living quarters for more than 40 full time residents and life-support systems independent of land-based facilities. There is also a natural energy utilization plant, a non-polluting water treatment system and fresh water converters.
The Aquapolis is one of the ideas to be presented to show what man can do with the sea in future to cope with the world's threatened food shortage and population explosion.
The Japanese Government has established an "ocean ranch" near Aquapolis to demonstrate a feeding machine for the farming of fish.
On the shore, many of the participating nations have built pavilions. These have been gathered into four groups, fish, ethnic and history, science and technically and ships. Expo '75 will be opened on 20 July and will run for 183 days.
