- Story Text: Michael Jackson fans in Japan flock to get a glimpse of the King of Pop's memorabilia, including a legendary white glove, which will be soon put up for sale by auction.
Hundreds of Japanese flocked to a Michael Jackson memorabilia event in downtown Tokyo on Monday (November 9) that showcased dozens of mementos of the King of Pop, including a legendary "Billie Jean" white crystal glove.
The 46 items previewed at the event will be put up for sale by auction in New York later this month.
"The most important piece of Michael Jackson that everyone could ever see or that's up for action is the while glove that's behind me. And it's the holy grail of Michael Jackson memorabilia. Because it's a white glove, and it's the white glove he wore in the Motown 25 special in 1983, where he premiered the Moon Walk to the world," said Los Angeles-based auctioneer Darren Julien.
"We estimate the white glove very conservatively at 40 to 60, 000 dollars. Now, that's US dollars, but anticipate that it will sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars," added Julien, president and CEO of Julien's Auctions.
In September, another white glove worn by Jackson sold at an auction in Australia for A$57,600 ($49,000 U.S. dollars), nearly twice the price auctioneers expected.
"I could feel the aura and warmth of Michael even from inside the glass case," Masae Hanafusa, a 31-year-old visitor said of Jackson's white glove.
Another visitor Rika Sakamoto, 47, said: "I'd seen the same glove on DVDs, so I was very moved."
Event organisers say the items showcased in Tokyo would have a total value of more than 200 million yen ($2.2 million U.S. dollars).
The New York auction will be held on November 21.
Jackson died on June 25 of cardiac arrest in Los Angeles at age 50, only days before he was to have begun a series of comeback concerts at London's O2 arena.
