- Story Text: Russian President Vladimir Putin and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda met on Saturday (September 8) ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit and praised their solid economic ties.
The Russian and Japanese delegations also signed an agreement strengthening their relationship.
"Today we take yet another step forward in our economic trade relations," Putin said.
Economics aside, the performance of Russia at the London 2012 Olympics dominated much of the conversation during a photo-opportunity before assembled media.
"During the London Olympics, I saw you doing a gesture of victory while watching the judo competition seated next to Prime Minister David Cameron. I congratulate Russia for winning three gold medals in the sport," Noda said, pumping his arms to imitate Putin's gestures during the Games.
Putin said he was proud of Russian athletes, but said Japan had "set the mode" in the sport of judo.
"Despite the fact that Japanese athletes performed lower than their abilities, all the same, the Japanese are the ones who set the mode, and all people are orientated on Japanese athletes and the Japanese tradition in this type of sport," Putin said.
Putin had a long list of bilateral meetings to attend on Saturday ahead of the leaders' summit and a dinner for leaders and their spouses later in the evening. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
