- Story Text: Rome riot police on Friday (May 6) stopped students pushing their way into banks as they protested against Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi's government and attacks on workers' rights.
Hundreds of high school and university students broke away from the main protest march during a general strike and unexpectedly headed towards a commercial part of Rome where banks and department stores are located.
Riot police watched as the students began plastering posters onto bank windows reading: 'Share out the money' and 'More community, less business.'
"We have decided today to block this area where there are businesses and business speculation and we will continue to do so. We are tired of living such a precarious life, we are tired as students and young people of seeing our futures being taken away from us," said student Marina Montanelli.
As small groups of students tried to push their way into bank offices riot police blocked entrances, forcing the students away.
A standoff continued into the early afternoon. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
