- Story Text: United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was welcomed to Baghdad by Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari on Monday (January 13), ahead of talks on regional issues including the conflict in neighbouring Syria.
Ban Ki-moon is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki for these discussions against the backdrop of a continuing violent standoff in Iraq's Anbar province.
Officials in Baghdad have blamed Iraq's slide back into violence on the conflict in Syria, which has inflamed sectarian tensions and fuelled instability across the region.
Ban Ki-moon's visit to the region comes just nine days ahead of the first direct talks between the Syrian opposition and President Bashar al-Assad's government - set for Jan. 22 in Switzerland and dubbed "Geneva 2". - Copyright Holder: POOL (CAN SELL)
