- Story Text: Technology leaders and innovators are attending a conference in Bahrain aimed at bringing together experts in the field of technology in the banking sector.
The event is the first of its kind to be held in the Gulf state, with organisers saying contributors from around 35 countries are taking part in this year's event.
According to the Arabian Banking Technology Exhibition and Conference (ABTEC) website, the forum is a place 'where finance meets innovation'.
''This is the inaugural event that we organised in Bahrain and the whole concept behind this event is to bring together the vendors on IT solutions for the financial services sector into Bahrain and let them interact with the regional audience, regional bankers who are seeking solutions for their respective financial institutions,'' said Saud Ghayas, who was involved in putting the two-day conference together.
The conference enables people to swap expertise and according to an international research firm, spending on IT in the Middle East this year is expected to be in the region of more than $32 billion, with financial services being a main contributor.
Ashraf Shokry, an IT banking specialist, is among those taking part in the event. He says it's important to address the customer's needs and for technology to keep up with their demands.
"So I think banks in Bahrain and in the region has to start immediately into the future and see how they can support the customer. The key word now is the customer experience. How to improve the customer experience using technology is very important and I think all banks have to start immediately to look into this,'' said Shokry.
Financial institutions from around the world are taking part in the event with companies from the Middle East, Pakistan and Romania all present at the fair.
"The technology is changing very fast and the banks are doing the same in order to keep the pace with the customer. We see that the customer's habits change a lot in the last few years and now is the moment that the bank should do the same. So being here at ABTEC in Bahrain is a good opportunity to see the Middle East business relate to banking, trading, financial services,'' said sales manager Dan Tusaliu from the company IQuest Group.
The conference, which ends on Wednesday (April 9), includes seminars and demonstrations in new technologies. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
