- Story Text: Heavy security and raging controversy surrounded Sunday's (12 January) opening of Israel's nationalist Herut movement at Kiryat Arba, near Hebron in the occupied West Bank area of the Jordan River. It was the first political convention to be held in an occupied area and was opposed by the Arab Municipal council of Hebron as well as Israel's Left-wing political parties.
The Herut movement is part of the Likud bloc, which is the main Opposition organisation, commanding 39 seats in the 120-seat Knesset (Parliament). Both are headed by Mr. Menahem Begin, a former underground leader.
The convention was attended by an overflow crowd of 1500 people ... among them, 1000 delegates. General Moshe Dayan, the former Israeli Defence Minister, was there, re-enforcing his support for the Opposition stand on the West Bank controversy.
President Ephraim Katzir defied mounting criticism and spoke at the conference. He told delegates kiryat Arba was founded more than 4000 years ago, and was one of the holiest cities in the land of Israel. He added: "It is a good feeling as a Jew to return to a region from which we were uprooted by force, and to come with hands stretched out for peace, construction, creation and co-operation with our neighbours."
