- Story Text: Sunlovers bask on new beach in the heart of Rome.
Tourists and residents of Rome on Monday (June 20) relaxed
on the small stretch of beach on the banks of the River Tiber
that flows through the city centre.
Officials hope the "Tevere (Tiber) Village" will duplicate
the success over the past few years of the Paris Plage, a beach
along the Seine River in the heart of the French capital.
Opened on Saturday (June 18), the 590-foot (180-metre) beach lies
in the shadows of St. Peter's Basilica and Castel Sant'Angelo. It
is built with trucked-in sand and synthetic grass and is equipped
with showers, swimming pool, deck chairs, a bar and restaurant.
Rome is one of Europe's top tourist destinations and enjoys
stiflingly hot summers. Most of the beaches, however, are
outside the city, away from the main tourist sights.
"The important thing for me is that it's near," said an
Italian woman. "It's quiet and clean."
"It's only been open two or three days this year and there are
already people here - especially German tourists," said an
Italian man. "There's a little swimming pool and beach with
sand they took from the sea. Basically it's quiet and
comfortable."
Asked what she particularly liked about the beach, a British woman
said: "The sand. And the bar's very good."
"You're in front of Castel Sant'Angelo, in front of St. Peter's
Square. To be here and sunbathe in a swimsuit, it's just amazing,"
said an Italian woman, a Rome resident.
"Tevere Village" will remain open until September 17. It cost
some 600,000 euros ($734,340), financed by the Battelli di Roma,
a company running ferries along the Tiber. Live music, games and
workouts are also planned.
