- Story Text: Dozens of stores and banks have been attacked and
looted in downtown Caracas after Hugo Chavez was reinstated as
President of Venezuela following two days of massive political
upheaval.
Sporadic violence continued in several parts of Venezuela's
capital on Sunday (April 14, 2002), following two days
of political uncertainty in which the country had two new
presidents before returning to their original leader populist
Hugo Chavez.
Just moments after the announce of Chavez return to power,
hundreds of people went to downtown Caracas and started
breaking windows at banks and forcing down doors of stores and
supermarkets.
According to the police the looters were supporters of
Chavez.
Some of the streets in the capital were littered with the
charred remains of items which had been in shops. Anyone
caught trying to loot in the area was frightened off by
gunfire from police and private security patrols.
Firemen continued to put out fires which smouldered well
into the afternoon. There were no reports on injuries or
deaths but police says that, at least 50 people were arrested.
Hugo Chavez returned to the presidency in a conciliatory
mood following Friday's (April 12) military coup which
collapsed in the face of a rebellion by loyalist troops and
massive protests.
Meanwhile President Hugo Chavez remained in the
presidential palace of Miraflores and made no statements on
the situation. In his reinstitution speech earlier on Sunday,
Chavez had been conciliatory, insisted he had not been
mistreated and recognized that both
his government and his opponents had made mistakes.
