- Story Text: The Irish woke to a new dawn on Monday as the
smoking ban in restaurants and bars took effect.
On the first day of a total non-smoking ban in all
buildings in Ireland on Monday (March 29), the few
customers in one bar which had been smoke-filled a few
hours earlier were obeying the laws. Some Dubliners,
however, were not in complete agreement with the ban.
"I don't think there was sufficient debate at all. I
think we have a mandate from a government that wants to
bring in a smoking ban, that wants to be the first country
to bring it in in the European Union because it coincides
with our presidency of the European Union. And I think that
our minister for health has taken on this smoking ban and
disregarded a lot of other health issues because it's
publicity," said barman Barry Currid.
Smoker John King was resigned to his fate.
"Just have to go outside, you know, hail rain or snow,
go outside first. Then again it I might cut down or give
them up," he said.
Some thought the ban too drastic.
"It's an Irish culture to relax and socialise in pubsI
think that they just have stepped a little bit too far,"
said non-smoker Pat Whittle.
One publican had an original idea to circumvent the
law. A double-decker bus parked in his car-park.
Said Tony McMahon: "It is legal. What makes it legal is
that none of our staff are allowed in to clean the bus that
is my job now from now on so the staff are having great fun
out of thisthe owner has to clean the bus to make it
legal."
However, with the weather warming up smokers preferred
to indulge their habits outside, rather than use the bus.
Maybe this will change when winter returns.
So far, the new regime has come in smoothly. Time will
tell if it will last.
