- Story Text: The European Union's foreign policy chief, Javier
Solana, has held talks with Palestinian President Yasser
Arafat as part of international efforts to bring Israel and
the Palestinians back to the negotiating table.
U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs
William Burns has met Ahmed Korei (also known as Abu Ala) at
Korei's offices in Abu Dis, near Jerusalem.
The new flurry of peace diplomacy coincided with fresh
raids by Israeli troops into the West Bank.
European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana said
after meeting Arafat in Ramallah on Saturday (June 1) that the
suffering of ordinary Palestinians made it vital to push ahead
with fresh peace moves.
"We are determined to see how we can put a political
process forward so that we can see an end to this situation
which is terrible for the people of Palestine," he told
reporters.
Solana was also due to meet with Israeli officials,
including Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on Sunday (May 2) as
part of international efforts to bring Israel and the
Palestinians back to the negotiating table.
U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs
William Burns has held a meeting with Ahmed Korei (also known
as Abu Ala) at Korei's office in the village of Abu Dis, near
Jerusalem.
Just before their meeting, Burns said that he perceived
real difficulties in the situation the Palestinians are facing
today, and expressed United States President George Bush's
determination to bring the Palestinian economy back on its
feet.
When asked about the purpose of his visit he responded
by saying: "To make clear the commitment of President Bush to
moving ahead on three tracks as I have said before, to renew a
serious political process to do everything we can to support
Palestinian efforts to build strong institutions and
preparations for statehood and also to re-establish an
effective Palestinian security performance. One thing though,
to answer your question, I have been struck by in my
conversations as in my travels is the extreme difficulties the
Palestinians face, the human difficulties that Palestinians
have to cope with, the difficulties and the importance of
rebuilding a Palestinian economy, and so that has a new sense
of urgency I think in addressing those issues, and that is
certainly a message I will take back with me to Washington."
The new flurry of peace diplomacy coincided with new
Israeli troop raids into the West Bank.
An Israeli sniper killed a Palestinian during an army raid
on the West Bank city of Nablus on Saturday as Palestinian
President Yasser Arafat discussed Middle East peace with a top
European envoy.
Palestinian witnesses and medical officials said the
sniper shot a 23-year-old man near his home in Nablus. The
Israeli army said the man had been killed in an exchange of
fire.
It said troops had detained more than 100 people in
Nablus, the nearby Balata refugee camp and the village of
Tamoun in military incursions launched on Friday. The army
says it is trying to catch militants behind a surge of suicide
bombings.
Israel continued to tighten its blockade around the West
Bank.
On Saturday (May 1), dozens of Palestinians were prevented
from crossing a checkpoint on the outskirts of Ramallah, as
Israeli troops mounted barb wire and piled sand bags at the
crossway.
Palestinians call the blockade collective punishment,
while Israel says the measures are essential to prevent
Palestinian attacks against Israelis.
In Hebron, Israeli soldiers entered a school in the
northeast of the city and threw tear-gas grenades. Some 50
girls were taken to hospital for treatment. The army had no
immediate comment.
