- Story Text: Clashes have erupted in the west Bank city of Ramallah
where Israeli tanks have remained, the day after an
impassioned plea by British Prime Minister Tony Blair for
Israel and the Palestinians to resolve differences and work
towards peace,
And in Nablus, thousands have attended the funeral of
Fahmy abu Eisha and Yasser Assidi, two Palestinian militants
killed by an Israeli missile attack on Thursday.
Trouble broke out on the streets of Ramallah after
prayers on Friday (November 2) with crowds throwing stones at
Israeli tanks and Israeli troops returning fire with rifles.
Israel had moved battle tanks into Palestinian-controlled
areas of the West Bank more than two weeks ago after
Palestinian militants assassinated an Israeli cabinet minister
on October 17.
And on Friday the troops stayed put, defying international
pressure, even from traditional allies like the United States,
for a complete withdrawal following their pullback from
Bethlehem and the neighbouring town of Beit Jala on Monday
(November 30).
Israeli armour remained in and around the West Bank towns
of Qalqilya and Tulkarm and the cities of Ramallah, Jenin and
Nablus.
In Ramallah, Israeli tanks have remained almost unmoved
from positions they took last month after the assassination of
Israeli Tourism Minister Rehavam Zeevi.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has said he would keep
his troops in Palestinian areas until the Palestinian
Authority meets Israel's' security demands.
Israel has demanded the Palestinians hand over the men who
killed Zeevi in revenge for Israel's assassination of the
leader of a radical group. The Palestinians say they are not
obliged to do so under agreements with Israel.
Meanwhile in the West Bank city of Nablus, thousands
attended the funeral of two Palestinian militants, Fahmy abu
Eisha and Yasser Assidi, killed on Thursday (November 1) by an
Israeli missile strike.
They were members of the militant Islamic group Hamas.
Helicopter gunships fired missiles at a car carrying the
men on the outskirts of Tulkarm, close to the border with
Israel.
Israeli security sources said they were planning a suicide
bombing inside Israel though Palestinian officials were
unaware the men were wanted by Israel.
Abu Eisha was burned beyond recognition. A third man, the
driver, was seriously wounded and captured by Israeli forces.
Israel said it launched Thursday's missile strike after
Palestinian Authority officials did nothing to stop a group of
militants that were planning to carry out what it called a
large suicide bombing.
Israel has tracked and killed more than 60 Palestinian
militants since the start 13 months ago of an uprising against
Israeli occupation.
