- Story Text: Cheryl Pope, whose husband has been convicted for
spying against Russia, has said she hoped Vladimir Putin would
pardon her husband as early as Thursday. Edmond Pope has been
convicted to 20 years of hard labour.
Cheryl Pope told a news conference on Wednesday
(December 13) that she hoped her husband would be released
from Lefortovo prison soon so that she could take him back to
the United States.
" I'm hoping and praying that we can take him home with
us. I don't know the exact logistics, I think that will depend
on Russian judicial system and Mr.Putin's wishes." she told
journalists at Moscow's Balchug-Kempinski hotel.
Pope, an American businessman and former naval
intelligence officer, was convicted last week of espionage by
a Russian judge and convicted to 20 years of hard labour.
A Russian presidential commission recommended President
Vladimir Putin to pardon Edmond Pope.
But the commission can only make recommendations to the
president -- Pope's fate is now in the hands of Vladimir Putin
and it is not certain when, or if, he will allow Pope to walk
out of jail.
" If he's released then I'll get him to a phone as fast as
I can. He needs to call his mother... he will need to talk to
her and I can only envision how emotional that is going to be"
said Cheryl.
Cheryl Pope also thanked all those who extended their
support throughout the eight month ordeal.
Pope, who suffers from a rare form of bone cancer, is
alleged to have made contact with a Russian scientist as part
of attempts to gather information on a Russian torpedo. He
says he openly bought technology and sought joint ventures
with Russian firms.
