- Story Text: Crowds gather to start the Holy Week in Bethlehem.
Christian pilgrims entered the Nativity Church in
Bethlehem to celebrate Palm Sunday (April 4), the first day
of the Holy Week before Easter.
Believers waved palm leaves as they celebrated the
holiday in historic tradition.
Palm Sunday marks Jesus' entry into Jerusalem before his
arrest and crucifixion, when followers strewed palm
branches in his path.
The Nativity Church sits in the centre of the modern
city of Bethlehem, facing Manger Square, and is one of the
oldest churches in the world.
On Thursday (April 1), Bethlehem was the site of a
gunbattle between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian gunmen
holed up in a mental hospital.
Israeli fire left gaping holes in walls and chunks of
plaster littering the corridors where nurses comforted
shaken patients, witnesses said. The Palestinians
surrendered after the firing stopped.
