- Story Text: European Union Foreign Relations Chief Catherine Ashton on Saturday (August 27) met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.
Ashton is travelling to Israel and the occupied West Bank "to renew her call for a return to the negotiating table and urgent progress in the Middle East Peace Process", a statement issued by her office said.
Palestinian-Israeli peace talks collapsed following Israel's refusal to renew a moratorium on settlement building in occupied territory.
On Sunday (August 28) Ashton will attend an inauguration ceremony for the construction of a Palestinian security compound in the West Bank city of Jenin.
Later on Sunday Ashton will meet with Israeli President Shimon Peres and Defence Minister Ehud Barak.
