- Story Text: John Terry will captain England in their friendly against the United States on Wednesday, manager Fabio Capello said on Tuesday (May 27).
Terry was left distraught last Wednesday (May 21) after missing the penalty that would have won the Champions League final for Chelsea against Manchester United in Moscow.
Capello told reporters that he had made the decision to name Terry as captain before the final.
"I decided before the first captain would be Gerrard after Rio Ferdinand and now John Terry. I think at this moment it is a good decision for John Terry after the not nice Wednesday," Capello said.
Speaking in English publicly for the first time since his appointment as England coach last December, Capello said that his team would have to play at a high level against the United States.
Capello said it was also important for him that the four Chelsea players on the losing side in Moscow should play again as soon as possible.
He said Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Ashley Cole and Terry would all play a part against the United States and also in next Sunday's friendly in Trinidad & Tobago.
Capello is using Wednesday's friendly against the U.S., next Sunday's against Trinidad & Tobago and August's friendly against the Czech Republic as preparation for the start of the World Cup 2012 qualifiers in September. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
