- Story Text: Anti-capitalist activists have clashed with police,
but have not succeeded in stopping a meeting of North and
South American foreign ministers, as they did in Seattle six
months ago.
Police fired pepper spray at several protesters on
Sunday (June 4) who clambered on a perimeter fence to erect a
giant anti-free-trade banner.Activists hurled smoke bombs,
placards and at least one bottle over the fence at the police.
The demonstration of 2,000 to 3,000 protesters was mainly
peaceful, though the activists also verbally abused lines of
policemen in riot gear on the other side of 10-foot (3-metre)
fences.
An estimated 2,000 policemen were deployed in Windsor to
ensure the meeting of the 34-nation Organisation of American
States was not interrupted.A further 4,000 police were on
standby across the river in Detroit, where a 200 to 250 people
marched noisily, but peacefully.
The foreign ministers succeeded in leaving the security
perimeter for discussions at an elegant restaurant and, by
mid-afternoon, most of the protesters had disbanded.
