Peruvian doctors successfully removed two giant tumors from an infant at a Lima hospital on Thursday (June 04).
The baby and his mother traveled from the rural town of San Marcos in Cajamarca and were able to go through with the surgery after getting financial help from donations and the state medical insurance.
Dr. Alfredo Broggi, the head of surgical team at Lima's Head, Neck and Face Center, explained the boy's history.
"This is a baby that came to us from Cajamarca, from San Marcos. He's one year, six months old and he came with a huge tumors on his neck, armpit and thorax," he said.
The one-and-a-half-year-old child weighed just 22 pounds but had two large tumors weighing 6.5 pounds growing from his neck, chest and armpit. According to his mother, the baby was a month old before the tumor began to show.
Nurses put the baby under general anesthetic before starting an operation that lasted around four hours.
"This operation lasted about four hours, with the implied risks because this is a very young child and it's been very difficult. But with our experience we've been able to manage the situation and take out the two tumors off the neck and thorax," Broggi said.
The boy's mother, Adelaida Tocas, said she ready to take him home.
"I'm very happy that the operation on my little boy turned out well. They took out the tumors and I'm ready to take him home," she said.
But doctors said Tocas will have to wait at least ten days as the boy recovers in Lima. The tumors, which were benign, had put pressure on child's upper left side, but doctors predicted a full recovery.
The child's father stayed home with the other children but was scheduled the arrive in Lima in the coming days. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
