- Story Text: Confident and unbeaten, WBO light welterweight champion Chris Algieri believes his strong jab can nullify the speed and power of boxing great Manny Pacquiao and propel the New Yorker to legendary status.
The American faces easily the sternest test of his six-year professional career when he steps into the Macau ring on Nov. 22 against Pacquiao, winner of world titles in eight different weight divisions, for the Filipino's WBO welterweight crown.
The two men squared off at a promotional event for the bout in Los Angeles on Wednesday (September 03) with the 5-foot-10-inch (177.5 cm.) American towering over the 5-foot-6-inch (167.5 cm.) Pacquiao, saying that he is eager for the fight.
"Just check out this fight, it's going to be tremendous, like I said, we got two champions, two guys who are hungry, two men who want to win, two men who are exciting to watch, so it's going to be a tremendous fight," the 30-year-old Algieri told reporters.
"Chris Algeri believes in himself, I believe in him, his team believes in him, and he will be winning. Come November 22nd, you'll see two souls in the ring, you're not going to see two people, you're going to see two people, you're going to see two souls in the ring, and may the best man come out. But just believe that Chris Algieri is here to bring that belt home," said Algieri's trainer, Tim Lane.
Pacquiao brushed off the talk, resting on his many laurels as a boxing champion.
"The fans of Manny Pacquiao, they want to see the killer instinct that they've been waiting for, to see, since before when I fight Cotto, Margarito, De La Hoya, Hawthorne, and that's what I'm trying to show this fight, and all I can say to his team is 'train hard, and I will train hard, and so that we can give a good fight, and we can entertain people, especially to those people who are going to watch the fight live in Macau," said Pacquiao.
Algieri picked himself off the canvas twice in the first round of his last bout in June against Russian Ruslan Provodnikov on his way to a split decision victory that improved his record to 20-0 with eight knockouts.
The 36-year-old Pacquiao scored a unanimous decision win over Timothy Bradley to regain the WBO welterweight title in April and avenge a highly controversial loss to the American in June 2012.
Pacquiao and Algieri are on a 27,000 mile promotional tour that takes them to New York City on Thursday.
The much anticipated bout between Pacquiao and Algieri will take place on November 22nd at the Cotai Arena in Macau, China. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
