- Story Text: Over 100 works by French artist Henri Matisse went on display in Rome on Thursday (March 5) with an exhibition to illustrate the importance of Arabesque decorative motifs in his work.
Set in Rome's Scuderie del Quirinale the "Matisse. Arabesque" exhibition shows paintings, drawings and costumes that concentrate on the eastern and oriental designs that brought about a radical change in the work of Matisse.
Much of the work at the exhibition is on loan from some of the most prestigious museums in the world including the Tate of London, the MET and the MoMa of New York, the Pushkin Museum of Moscow and the Hermitage of St Petersburg.
''These are masterpieces that any exhibition organiser in the world would want to have," explained Director of the Museum Matteo Lafranconi.
"It is extraordinary to have this number of masterpieces from such important lenders, ranging from the Hermitage (Museum of St. Petersbourg) to the Pushkin (Museum in Moscow), from the Metropolitan (of New York) to the MOMA, from the Tate Gallery (of London) to the Washington National Gallery, to the various Matisse museums in France and in the USA, and to private collections like the Fondazione Agnelli',' he said.
''These are all moments of a strong fascination, of an endless and limitless curiosity that Matisse had towards non-western cultures from which he obtained graphic and formal solutions that become essential to his creative discourse,'' Lafranconi said.
On show are masterpieces that include "Girl with a Persian Cap", "Zorah on the Terrace," "Moroccan in Green", and "Flowering Ivy in a Pot With a Rose." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
