- Story Text: German and Dutch police take part in a joint exercise in preparation for the 2006 World Cup.
Dutch and German police forces have carried out a joint exercise on Thursday (September 15) with some 800 volunteers acting as "hooligans" in preparation of the 2006 World Cup, to be hosted in Germany next summer.
The exercise on an airfield at Weeze airport in western Germany saw 600 police in riot gear from Germany and the nearby Netherlands battle with extras dressed as true football hooligans, equipped with flags and football scarves.
Following the exercise, which left one photographer injured after he
was hit in the face by a flying apple, was a full success, according to the head of the exercise.
"Already we can say that it is working out very well, considering
the different main goals of this exercise and different organisation
units," policeman Juergen Gaidas said.
"The cooperation is excellent and the measures are working out
well so we can be very happy," Gaidas added.
Germany hosts the 2006 World Cup from June 9 to July 9.
