- Story Text: Thousands of Iraqis have participated in the burial of
bodies found in a mass grave south of the city of Basra.
Since the fall of Saddam Hussein in the U.S.-led war on
Iraq, Iraqis who say they have witnessed mass executions in
remote parts of the country have been helping uncover mass
grave sites in Najaf, Basra, Babylon and other areas.
On Wednesday (May 14), Iraqis carried through the streets
of Basra the coffins of some of the victims found two days
earlier at a mass grave site at al-Barjasiya, south of Basra.
The mourners intended to bury the coffins near the holy
city of Najaf.
The mass grave at al-Barjasiya is different from the huge
mass grave found further north, at Manahil, about 90 kms south
of Baghdad, in which the bodies of thousands of Shiite Iraqis
believed to have been executed have been found.
Amnesty International has said that over the past 20 years
it has collected information about 17,000 disappearances in
Iraq but the actual figure may be much higher.
