- Story Text: Hundreds of Orthodox believers have taken part in an
anti-Vatican protest in the Russian capital.
More than one thousand followers of the Russian
Orthodox church gathered outside the Vatican's embassy in
Moscow on Friday (February 22) to protest against what they
said is the Catholic church's expansion into Orthodox lands.
The protesters, carrying Orthodox icons, anti-Pope and
anti-Vatican banners said they were angered by what they see
as attempts by the Catholic church to seek converts among
Orthodox believers.
"They have depraved their religion and have decided to use
honesty and conscience of orthodox Russian people," said one
woman.
"Until christianity is fighting each other, the sects and
different religions which are not traditional for our
territory are flourishing," said another protester.
The Vatican recently fomalised its presence in Russia,
creating four diocese in the country. Leaders of the Russian
Orthodox Church have repeatedly accused the Vatican of trying
to convert their followers.
