- Story Text: Four Iraqi servicemen killed in attacks in Basra.
Iraqi police said four Iraqi Army soldiers were
killed on Saturday (February 5) by a hidden roadside bomb
in the southern city of Basra, which has been relatively
peaceful compared with the rest of Iraq.
One civilian, a woman, was also injured in the attack.
The vehicle exploded close to the Old State Buildings,
in the Al-Hussein district, as British troops were carrying
out patrols.
Bomb disposal experts were sent to the scene to examine
the device, along with British quick-response teams.
In three separate attacks in Samarra, four other Iraqi
servicemen were killed in the restive Sunni triangle region
north of Baghdad, hospital sources and the Iraqi military
said.
More than 20 Iraqi police and soldiers have been killed
since the election.
Also on Saturday the U.S. military said two American
soldiers were killed and four wounded on Friday (February
4) in a roadside bomb near the northern town of Baiji.
Those killed were on patrol in Humvees when the bomb
went off.
Another roadside bomb in the area on Saturday killed one
American soldier and wounded seven.
Since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, at least
1,107 American soldiers have been killed in action.
Including non-combat deaths, the toll is at least 1,444. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
