  • Story Text: The Dunhill Victor Ludorum -- the highest in the Dunhill International Show Jumping Championships -- went to Switzerland's Paul Weier on Wolf on Saturday (21 December) at Olympia, London.

    The prize, incorporating the Dunhill European Trophy, was GBP 6500 sterling (about U.S.$15,600).

    This was the leading Swiss rider's first appearance at a Dunhill International Show. Wolf completed the final jump-off in 32 seconds.

    West Germany's Alwin Schockemohle, riding Warwick, came second. A brilliant performance on Friday (20 December) won Warwick and Schockemhole the second highest prize in the championships -- the Alfred Dunhill Puissance title.

    Last year's Victor Ludorum winner, Graham Fletcher, who rode Tauna Dora, was third this year.

    Both the runners-up completed the final jump-off nearly two seconds ahead of Weier but they registered four faults each.

    Italy's representative, Vittorio Orlandi, on Fiorello, in the first jump-off at the Dunhill International Show Jumping Championships at Olympia, London, on Saturday. Orlandi was trying for the highest prize in the competition, but was eliminated in the first round.

    Nelson Pessoa from Brazil, riding Salvador, was among the five finalists competing for the Dunhill Victor Ludorum, which incorporates the Dunhill European trophy.

    From Switzerland, Paul Weier, on his way to winning the Victor Ludorum title. This was the leading Swiss rider's first attempt at a Dunhill International championship. His horse, wolf, was jumping against the clock and managed to complete the course in thirty-two seconds.

    Alwin Schockemohle of West Germany, riding Warwick, had to beat Weier's time. Schockemohle had won the second highest prize in the competition the day before, and three years before took out the premier prize. But on Saturday his attempt to recapture the title failed when Warwick knocked down a fence, although he completed the jump-off in only thirty seconds.

    Another previous winner of the Victor Ludorum, Britain's Graham Fletcher, rode Tauna Dora. Like Schockemohle, Fletcher collected four faults. Fletcher's time was point four seconds behind Schockemohle's.

    The trophy carrying six thousand five hundred pounds went to Weier.

    This year's show attracted capacity crowds. Its organisers said it was the best ever, with an impressive line-up of competitors, including three international champions.
