- Story Text: Seismic activity has ripped through Italy over the last week, jolting awake the volcano of Mount Etna and rocking south-central Italy.
Europe's most active volcano had far from finished its spectacular display on Wednesday (October 30) evening. 2,100 metres above sea level on the side of Mount Etna it is like entering a surreal battle ground.
The earth around the volcano's eight fissures trembles under foot as fountains of fire up to 100 metres high are shot into the sky. Huge rocks whistle through the air as they are hurled from the volcanos innards and left to drop from great heights onto the red-hot flows of lava moving down the mountain.
Clouds of black smoke continued to billow out from the cracks of Etna well into Thursday morning (October 31) - filling the air with an incessant exchange of artillery fire like booms.
No-one pretends to really understand what Mount Etna will decide to do next although experts believe the eruptions may be slowing down.
It is is also not clear whether the recent dramatic eruptions from Mount Etna are connected to the earthquake which rocked south-central Italy on Thursday morning.
What is clear is the whole zone of southern Italy has been hit by a round of seismic activity since Sunday (October 27).
Residents living in the shadow of Europe's most active volcano suffered the biggest quake in recent years on Tuesday (October 29). They have been praying to their local saint and protector of the town to stop the tremors.
They are now also praying for the people of Campobasso, epicentre of Thursdays quake, 226 kilometres southeast of Rome.
"These are meant also for them, everyone who needs them, if you don't trust the saints you are missing something in your life," said elderly resident Grazia Pulvirenti, even more concerned since the news of the earthquake in Campobasso.
"We are praying for everyone, for the city of Linguaglossa but for everyone else as well", said another resident Lucia, who says she will continue to pray to her saint until the tremors stop. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
