- Story Text: Italy's thirty-sixth Government since the fall of Fascism, formed by the Prime Minister Sig. Mariano Rumor, was sworn in at the Presidential Palace on Friday (15 March) -- but political observers say it will probably fall within two months.
Sworn in by President Giovanni Leone, the government is a new coalition of the centre-left. Its members are the Christian Democrats, Socialists and Social Democrats.
The Republican Party, whose secretary, Sig Ugo ???a Malfa, provoked the fall of the previous government by his resignation from the Treasury, has also promised support for the Government.
Amongst the government's main problems will be steering a delicate course between containing inflation and provoking deflation, and consequent unemployment, which would reduce the ability of the economy to re-adjust to the new energy situation.
Political observers in Rome predicted the new government would be only a stop-gap measure until the national referendum on divorce, now timed for early May.
Within hours of the swearing-in ceremony the Communist Party, the largest outside the Communist world, promised it would provide "intransigent opposition" rather than the benevolent opposition it showed the previous administration.
