- Story Text: Russia and Belarus criticise OSCE role in Kyrgyzstan.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met his
Belorussian counterpart Sergei Martynov on Wednesday (March
30) ahead of a visit to Moscow early next week by Belarus
President Alexander Lukashenko.
The events in Kyrgyzstan were among several key issues
discussed during Wednesday's talks in Moscow.
Both Lavrov and Martynov criticised the role of the
OSCE (the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in
Europe) influencing the events in Kyrgyzstan, where mass
street protests over elections criticised by the OSCE led
to the toppling of the regime of President Askar Akayev.
The Russian foreign minister said the OSCE was now
finding itself in a position where it had to work with a
new parliament, the process of election of which the
organisation had criticised.
"We should not forget that the only legitimate power
body now in Kyrgyzstan is the parliament and this fact is
recognised by everyone. And this parliament was formed
based on the results of the elections criticised by the
OSCE (Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe)
observers. Now the OSCE's representatives, including its
secretary-general is trying to work with this parliament,
accepting the fact that its election were legitimate. I
think its a clear illustration of how problems can be
created where they were possible to avoid," said Russian
Foreign MInister Sergei Lavrov at a briefing after the
talks.
On Monday, the newly elected parliament of Kyrgyzstan
finally took over and named Kurmanbek Bakiyev prime
minister, a position that automatically made him acting
president. OSCE Secretary-General Jan Kubis has visited
Kyrgyzstan after the country's lightning coup to meet with
its new leaders.
Belorussian Foreign Minister Sergei Martynov called on the
OSCE to change its criteria for monitoring elections.
"The situation in Kyrgyzstan has confirmed serious
concerns expressed by Belarus and Russia had expressed in
regards with the OSCE's methods of elections' monitoring,"
said Martynov.
