- Story Text: The Valderrama course in Spain has been chosen as the 1997 Ryder Cup venue, it was announced by the cup committee at Wentworth, Surrey, England, on Wednesday (May 27).
The decision was a disappointment for Spanish golfer Seve Ballesteros who wanted it to go to Novo Sancti Petri, near Cadiz.
But Valderamma, on the Costa del Sol was, as expected, chosen as the first continental club to host the match against America.
Valderrama, home of the Volvo Masters since 1988, was favourite ever since it became the first club to make a bid for the event in April 1992.
Ballesteros came up with a multitude of reasons why he did not think it was suitable, even saying that as "the most elitist club in the world" it would be "fatal" for the development of golf in Spain to go there. He believed a public course should have been chosen instead.
