- Story Text: Wrapping up his first official visit to Washington, Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas has called on U.S.
Secretary of State Colin Powell at the State Department on Friday (July 25, 2003).
Earlier in the day, Abbas got a warm welcome from U.S.
President George W. Bush at the White House, who praised his peacekeeping efforts.
Abbas, better known as Abu Mazen, held talks with U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell at the State Department. Their meeting lasted about an hour and neither Powell nor Abbas took questions from reporters after their meeting.
Abbas' trip to Washington marks a flurry of diplomatic efforts to help bolster the U.S.-backed road map to Middle East peace. Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is scheduled to meet with Bush next week.
Abbas has pressed for the release of thousands of Palestinian prisoners and an end to work on the security fence Israel is building in the West Bank, as well as a halt to settlement activity.
Bush called Israel's security fence "a problem," but did not endorse a blanket release of Palestinian prisoners, and pressed Abbas to crack down on Palestinian militants.
The president also announced plans to boost economic cooperation with the Palestinian Authority. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
